About
Churchdown Bowling Club
We welcome all visitors to the Churchdown Bowling Club and would like
the opportunity to tell you a little of the history of how the club
evolved.
In 1922 the existing United Services Club decided, after a public meeting,
to provide sporting facilities for the returning service personnel from
the First World War and so work was started on a four rink bowling green
and tennis court. This work was completed in 1923 after archaeologists
examined a possible medieval burial site where the green was to be laid.
In the fifties a local aircraft factory asked if they could use the
green while theirs was being laid, and jointly funded the cost of increasing
the green to six rinks. In 1960 because of the lack of ex-service members
it was changed from a service club to a private members club open to
the entire village.
Churchdown is a mixed bowling club with men's, ladies and mixed fixtures,
we also have a very active seniors section.
We are situated in the village of Churchdown about half way between
Gloucester and Cheltenham away from main roads yet only ten minutes
from the M5 motorway. The bowls club is a section of the main Churchdown
Club which has a large bar and lounge facility, tennis courts, dance
floor, skittle allies and snooker room.
The club is in the fortunate position of being able to offer ample free
parking adjacent to the green, even for coaches.
We are always happy to accommodate touring clubs to the area whenever
possible.
